چکیده

JILA Fellow John Hall will deliver the 2006 Richard C. Lord Lecture on May 2, on “Optical clocks, combs and coherence: defining and measuring optical frequency.” Born in 1934 in Denver, Hall is an alumnus of the Carnegie Institute of Technology, where he received B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. He conducted postdoctoral studies at the Department of Commerce’s National Bureau of Standards, now called National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Along with 11 others, he moved to Boulder in 1962 to participate in founding the new Joint Institute of Laboratory Astrophysics, now known as JILA. He retired from NIST in 2004, but continues his JILA research enthusiastically. He has lectured at the University of Colorado at Boulder since 1967 and is currently a NIST Senior Fellow, Emeritus. Hall is well known for developing and applying innovative laser techniques to the study of fundamental physical constants and theories, and to advance measurement science. He shared one half of the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physics with Theodor Hänsch. Hall is cited by the Nobel Prize committee for “contributions to the development of laser-based precision spectroscopy, including the optical frequency comb technique”. The other half of the prize was awarded to Roy Glauber. Hall has received many other honors for his pioneering work, including the Optical Society of America’s Max Born Award “for pioneering the field of stable lasers, including their applications in fundamental physics and, most recently, in the stabilizaJohn Hall Good Vibrations!

An introduction to ion optics for the mass spectrograph.

A mass spectrograph is an instrument that separates and simultaneously focuses ions, along a focal plane, of different mass/charge ratios that are diverging in direction and that have a variable velocity. With these instruments and a spatially sensitive ion detector, simultaneous detection can be employed, which has been shown to improve precision and throughput (as compared to a mass spectrome...

Spectroscopy on Small Telescopes: the Echelle Spectrograph

In recent years there has been a trend toward the automation of modest sized observatories, especially those involved with photoelectric photometry. Although undoubtedly useful, there is clearly a need for more advanced instrumentation such as spectrographs. The relatively small telescope sizes places severe limits on the choice of spectrograph configuration. A fiber-fed echelle spectrograph is...

Building a CCD Spectrograph for Educational or Amateur Astronomy

We discuss the design of an inexpensive, high-throughput CCD spectrograph for a small telescope. By using optical fibers to carry the light from the telescope focus to a table-top spectrograph, one can minimize the weight carried by the telescope and simplify the spectrograph design. We recently employed this approach in the construction of IntroSpec, an instrument built for the 16-inch Knowles...

Design-led Software Strategy for the 2df Survey Spectrograph

We describe the novel approach used for the software developed for the 2dF survey spectrograph. 2dF is a 400-ber multi-object spectrograph designed for the Anglo-Australian Telescope. One of its primary missions is a survey of 250,000 galaxy redshifts within two years, and on-line, real-time and nished product data reduction is the requirement driving the software design. To achieve these goals...

The Infrared Imaging Spectrograph (iris) for Tmt: Simulation of the Atmospheric Dispersion Corrector Using Idl

IRIS (InfraRed Imaging Spectrograph) is a first light instrument presently being developed for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). IRIS will include an integral field spectrograph and an imaging camera, covering wavelengths from 0.84 μm to 2.4 μm (infrared range). IRIS will work with the Narrow-Field Infrared Adaptive Optics System (NFIRAOS), achieving an unprecedented angular resolution [1], cre...

The Performance and Scientific Rationale for an Ir Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrograph on a Large Space Telescope

We describe a concept for an imaging spectrograph for a large orbiting observatory such as NASA’s proposed Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) based on an imaging Fourier transform spectrograph (IFTS). An IFTS has several important advantages which make it an ideal instrument to pursue the scientific objectives of NGST. We review the operation of an IFTS and make a quantitative evaluation of...
